History,Walker. Literature The advanced literature course deals in the firstyear with American, in the second year with Englishauthors. Besides the reading of short selections inclass, library reference work in biography is required,and topical reports upon* the longer works of eachwriter. Pancoasts Introduction to American Litera-ture and Howes English Literature are used as text-books. English composition The English composition is closely related to theliterature, and includes oral and written work uponbooks and authors, as well as upon subjects from every-day life. The emphasis is upon clearness in everyform of exposition, then upon interesting description ornarrative. The second year develops argument morefully. Zoology The work in zoology consists of a careful study of atype animal of each class of vertebrate and invertebrateanimals to give the student a knowledge of animalstructure and classification, to train him to observein an accurate and orderly manner, and to make com- 56

A study is also made of allied forms of eachtype to broaden the students knowledge of animal life.Attention is given to the economic importance of theanimals studied, their geographical distribution, andtheir adaptation to their environment. Field work iscarried on as far as it is possible-Ill AGRICULTURECharles K. Graham, Director Three courses in agriculture are offered. Course I is open to students who have been ad-mitted to the Third Year Junior Class in the nightschool, and requires three full years for its completion.The purpose of this course is to give such knowl-edge of agriculture as shall be of immediate useto the man on the farm. Students spend not less thanone-half of their time at work, under supervision,gaining a knowledge of the best modern practice infield, garden, orchard, greenhouse, horse barn, dairy,and poultry houses.
