oung woman with curls ofgolden brown. The colour of the hair finds an echo in the richgold of the chair upon which the left arm rests. Tliere is aslightly arrogant tilt to the head and considerable animationin the face. On the left of the picture is a column, partly hiddenby a curtain, and the suggestion of a brilliant sunset. Thecolour is highly keyed for this period and phase of portraiture. The figure in white against the background of varying tonesof red makes an effective design.
