Close at hand stands the youth,wearing a red cap and red trousers, helping to liold the horses leg. Above thegroup the facade of the barn, with stone and brickwork showing through thebroken plaster, rises out of the )Hcture and is crossed by a grapevine growingat the corner and extending from the eaves to the open door. On the left of thegrou(), beyond a deep shadow cast by the barn and a smaller building behind it, isa bit of hedge, and farther away is a sunlit landscape with the figure of a peasantwoman approaching along a narrow path between cultivated fields. Two henssearch for their food near the hind legs of the horse, and in the left foregroundan earthen crock stands half buried in the ground. Siijned at the loiver left, C. The cow, after the manner of its kind, scenting a lusciouscabbage in one of the panniers, walks close at the heels of the donkey, and thewoman, stick in hand, keejjs her at a safe distance. In the foreground an activesheep-dog, black, with spotted white face, front paws and breast, dashes acrossthe road, herding the flock of sheep together. The group is in strong sunlightfrom the left, and the shadows indicate that the sun is fairly high in the heavens.On the left, seen beyond the slope of a small rounded hill, is a glimpse of a broadflat meadow on a small bight of the sea extending to a low line of trees whichforms the distant horizon.
