EVERGREEN TREES. Desirable in all ornamental planting, as they retain their foliage through the winter, adding a tone of warmth and verdure, and imparting a charm to the landscape that deciduous trees are incapable of. They should be judiciously planted on small as well as on large grounds. On the latter, the larger kinds can arrive at full development, and should be planted at distances sufficient to allow of their natural and symmetrical growth without crowding. The Arbor Vilses, Junipers,, Dwarf Pines and Retinosporas on account of their small size, are most suitable for small lots ; but nearly all species and varieties look well on small grounds while the trees are young. THUYA, occident- alis( American Arbor Vitse) — A well knowD shrub or tree popular for ornamental hedges, rapid growth, coni- cal form. 18 to 24 inches, 25c.; 2-3 feet. 50c.; 8-4 feet, 75c. pyramidalis (Py- ramidal A. V.) — The most narrow, col- umnar-like of evergreens, medium growth, very distinct, light green, com- pact foliage. Very effective in landscape; takes the place of the Irish Juniper, which is not always hardy. 18-24 inches, 50c.; 2-3 feet, 75c.; 3-4 feet, $1.00. globosa (Globe Arborvitse)—Very dwarf and compact; grows naturally into a rounded, almost ball-like form, that makes it useful for grouping, specimens, or vases. The foliage is deep, dark green. 10-12 inches, 50c.; 12-18 inches, 75c. compacta (Compact Arborvitse)—Dwarf, dense little evergreen, having light green foliage
