(c) The Pedagogy of Arithmetic.—A study of the peda-gogy of the subject will include such topics as the educationalvalue and aim of arithmetic; the number concept; the childspower to use the type of thought required in the use of number;the childs interests—drills, games and problems; the nature andpurpose of problems; the analysis and solution of problems;the heuristic method of development, etc. This course will con-sist of a study of the types of problems common in all the gradesin public schools, lectures and assigned readings from YoungsTeaching of Mathematics, Smiths Teaching of ElementaryMathematics, Smiths Teaching of Arithmetic, McMurrysSpecial Method in Arithmetic, Stones Arithmetical Abilities,Jacksons Educational Significance of Sixteenth Century Arith-metic and many others. A study will also be made of older andrecent text-books and of recent courses of study.

State: Normal, School at Montclair 35 Nature-Study The work in biological nature-study extends through twosemesters. The topics follow the order of the seasons. Living-material is used whenever possible. Fall topics are autumn flowers, seed dispersal, insects andother arthropods, bulb-planting, trees in their leafy and winterconditions, and the preparation of nature for winter. Topicsstudied during the winter months are principles of forestry;yeasts, molds and bacteria, considered from physiological, eco-nomic and sanitary standpoints; seed germination and seed-lings; differentiated parts of plants; vegetative propagation ofplants, and soils in relation to the need of the plant. Springtopics are school and home gardening, spring flowers, plant fam-ilies and associations, birds, the development of the toad and frog,early appearing insects and their relation to the other animalsmentioned. Students make and care for school gardens on the grounds ofthe school as a part of their regular wo
