The course is not ostensibly a course in biological science, butmuch of the time is necessarily given up to the acquisition of factmatter because so many students are handicapped by having failedto take any such work in high school, and because many othershave had so little contact with the real objects of nature. The course does not aim to train any general power of observ-ation, but to include as wide a range of observations as possibleof objects worth observing, or that children will be likely to askabout, or which the prospective teacher may be called upon touse in her work. The flowers, trees, birds, insects, etc., are notstudied from the scientific standpoint, but as more or less relatedto our lives, and in such a way as to give the student a readyrecognition of them—a speaking acquaintance.

State Normal School at Montclair. 39 Geography. This subject is required three hours per week throughout oneyear. The course aims to give an understanding of the control whichclimate, surface and other geographic factors exert over thelife of man and animals upon the globe; a knowledge of andability to use the authoritative source material available; theability to read maps, and some of the best ways of presenting thesubject to children. The first half years work is devoted to a study of mathematicalgeography, the atmosphere, the lands, the work of running water,and the oceans. As much field work as possible is done in thisconnection, as the school is particularly well situated for it.Books most used in this part of the course are Dodges Geog-raphy and Salisburys Physiography. The first half of the second semester is devoted to the studyof the continent of North America and the countries of Europemost closely connected with us through trade.
