g insects and their relation to the otheranimals mentioned. Students will make and care for school gardens on the groundsof the school as a part of their regular work in this department. The course is not ostensibly a course in biological science, butmuch of the time is necessarily given up to the acquisition of factmatter because so many students are handicapped by having failedto take any such work in high school, and because many othershave had so little contact with the real objects of nature. The course does not aim to train any general power of observ-ation, but to include as wide a range of observations as possibleof objects worth observing, or that children will be likely to askabout, and which the prospective teacher may be called upon touse in her work. The flowers, trees, birds, insects, etc., are notstudied, from the scientific standpoint, but as more or less relatedto our lives, and in such a way as to give the student a readyrecognition of them—a speaking acquaintance.

A brief preliminary survey of the essential facts of Mathe-matical Geography is made. The work on temperature, airpressure, condensation of moisture, etc., is done in connectionwith the work in Physics.
