As much field work as possible is done in thisconnection, as the school is particularly well situated for it. Booksmost used in this part of the course are Dodges Geography andSalisburys Physiography. The first half of the second semester is devoted to the study ofthe continent of North America and the countries of Europe mostclosely connected with us through trade. Through this study thepupils are expected to gain an insight into the method of continentstudy for the grammar grades. Particular emphasis is laid uponthe influence of geographic environment in determining routes oftrade, location of industrial centers, and the distribution of com-modities. The books most used in this part of the course areDodges Advanced Geography, Mills International Geography.Robinsons and Binghams Commercial Geographies, Miss SemplesThe Influence of Geographic Environment, and various governmentpublications.

State Normal School at Montclair 37 The work in methods of teaching geography is left until the lastquarter in order to take advantage of the instruction in the art ofquestioning and in making lesson plans given in the course inpedagogy. The chief divisions of the work are a study of the con-tent of geography; determining factors in arranging subject-matterfor different grades; methods of teaching as applied to subject-matter determined for each grade. Each student prepares lessonplans for different grades and teaches the class. American History This subject requires three periods per zveek throughout oneyear. The course presents a general survey of the rise and develop-ment of the American nation and includes a discussion of methodsof teaching history and civics in the primary and grammar grades,the question of curricula, the use of sources and illustrative ma-terial and a knowledge of historical bibliography. The chief topicsstudied are European influences on American colonization,
