Fr. 1 oz. will sow 60 feet of ron\ and produce about 500 roots. i Asparagus seed should be sown in early spring, on rich, light soil, in drills a foot or more apart, covering the seed an inch deep. Thin to three or four inches, and keep the ground mellow and clear of weeds the first season by frequent hoe- ing. The next spring, transplant to a permanent bed, which should be in deep, mellow soil, made very rich by a liberal application of manure. See that the small roots of the plants are spread out well; set them in rows about 18 inches apart and a foot apart in the row; cover the crown of the plant three or four inches. The beds should be so narrow that the center can be reached from either side without treading among the plants. Do not begin to cut the young shoots until the second or third spring from transplanting, and only sparingly at first. If well cared for and top-dressed every year, asparagus beds will sometimes remain in bearing for twenty or thirty years. Salt, applied in the spring, in quantities of from two to three pounds to the square yard, is beneficial. PALMETTO. This new and popular variety excels the old and standard sorts in three important points, earliness. jn'oductiveness, and uniformity of growth. An average bunch of 15 shoots will measure 13 to 14 inches in circumference. Its qualities recommend it to Market Gardeners, its earliness and fine appear- ance commanding for it the highest prices.
