History The first definite action looking to the founding of thisCollege was the appointment in 1890 of a committee by the FirstBaptist church of Abilene to propose to the Sweetwater Associ-ation the founding of an associational school. The Association approved the idea and named a committee,consisting of Hon. K. K. Legett, Rev. Geo. W. Smith and H. C.Hord, Esq., with plenary powers. Several offers were made for the location, the best in thejudgment of the Committee being that of a syndicate then con-trolling the North Park addition to the town of Abilene. Six-teen acres of land covering a slight eminence and five thousanddollars in cash, supplemented by several thousand dollars inprivate subscriptions, secured the location on its present site. The committee subsequently reported its decision to theAssociation, which at that time covered a territory of about45,000 square miles. The Association received the report favor-ably, appointed trustees, and empowered them to proceed withthe wo
