ic schools, by which those colored pupilswho complete the public school course are transferred to thegrade of the university for which they prove themselves pre-pared. GIRLS INDUSTRIAL SECTION. This section which has now been in operation for elevenyears, has trained hundreds of girls in the use of the needleand the machine, and in the making of clothing and variousother articles. It has proven a success, is very popular withthe students, and is a department that reflects great credit onthe pupils. This work is regularly and systematically graded, begin-ning with the plain and simple, and advancing to the costlyand intricate. The pupils furnish their own materials. Students in this department are thoroughly instructed inall manner of needle work, and in cutting and fitting. Thosepupils who complete a course in this department receive a cer-tificate stating the same. We design the addition of such in-dustries as will afford them the means of earning an honorableand competent livlihood.

On the 27th of June, 1890, the Board of Trustees organizedand made a suitable appropriation to provide for an Agrtural and Mechanical Department of the University. Steps were then taken to put in operation, without delay,this much needed department, AGRICULTURAL SECTION. Professor Hugh Jamieson was elected Superintendent ofthe Agricultural Section of this Department An excellent farm of over one hundred acres of tillableland which we formerly rented, has nov been purchased bythe Governor, with an appropriation of eight thou.-.made by the legislature of the State at its last meeting, l\ ifnow in operation, near the upper suburbs of New Orleans, andfronting on the Mississippi river.
