comparatively a low relative humidity. We often hear persons complaining of 85 degrees or 90degrees temperature and 90 percent humidity; in fact, it isnot unusual for writers upon the subject of humidity to makesuch reference. Such conditions never exist in our climate,as a careful survey of the climatic records will show. The Actual Conditions: We often have 95 per cent,or even 100 per cent saturation early in the mornings, or onfoggy days at temperatures in summer of 75 degrees orbelow. As the day grows warmer it will be found that therelative humidity decreases. There is just as much watervapor in the atmosphere, but owing to the increased tem-perature the moisture holding capacity has increased. (Seepage 113.) The lower the relative humidity the greater is thedifference between the wet and dry bulb temperatures. NewYork City, as compared to other localities, usually has a highpercentage of humidity, being surrounded as it is by water, 85 Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America

In dryclimates the depression of the wet bulb is still greater. Cooling by Evaporation: As explained on page 116,when air is brought in contact with minutely divided oratomized spray water at ordinary temperatures, a portion ofthe water is evaporated, thus lowering the temperature of theair. The amount of cooling that is procured bears a directrelation to difference between the wet and dry bulb tem-peratures of the entering air. A Carrier Air Washer and Humidifier, installed in oneof the largest New York hotels during hot days, was ableto deliver air to one of their dining-rooms at an average of13 degrees below the outside temperature, thereby loweringthe temperature of the room 10 degrees lower than when
