Description

Formations 6 alpha jets de la PaF 2018 ainsi qu'un Consolidated PBY-5A.

Construit sous licence par Boeing Canada Inc. en 1942, ce Catalina est entré en service dans la Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) avec le matricule 9767, puis a été affecté au Squadron 162/S, en Islande. C’est là, au sud de Reykjavik, qu'il prend en chasse et coule le sous-marin allemand U-342. Le F/O Tom Cooke est aux commandes ce jour-là.

L'Unterseeboot 342 est un sous-marin océanique de type VII C. Construit dans les chantiers de Nordseewerke à Emden, la quille du U-342 est posée le 7 décembre 1941 et il est lancé le 10 novembre 1942. L'U-342 entre en service 2 mois plus tard.

il réalise sa première patrouille, quittant le port de Kiel le 3 avril 1944 pur une mission de surveillance du trafic maritime et de recherche de navire ennemi jusqu'au milieu de l'Atlantique Nord. Après 15 jours en mer, l'U-342 est coulé le 17 avril 1944 au sud-ouest de l'Islande à la position géographique de 60° 32′ N, 29° 20′ O par des charges de profondeur lancées par le Canso A 9767. Les 51 membres d'équipage décèdent dans cette attaque.
