| Description |
English: Cat and Wheel pub sign The sign on this unusually-named pub in Gloucester Road could do with repainting (the other side has almost vanished) but it is not the original name. An earlier inn here was known as the Catherine Wheel, but when puritan Parliamentary forces occupied Bristol in the civil war, letters on the sign would have been painted out changing the name to Cat in Wheel, in order to remove the religious reference to St Catherine who was martyred on a torture wheel. |
