One mustknow its history though, or many of the historicsouvenirs will be passed by without an impres-sion worth while. On Mont Auxois, rising up back of the town,stands a colossal statue of Vercingetorix, inmemory of a resistance which he here madeagainst the usually redoubtable Caesar. Six kilometres away there is one of the mostromantically historic of all the minor chateauxof France and one not to be omitted from any-bodys chateaux tour of France. Montbard and Bussy-Rabutin 69 a part of the original fabric, was the conceitof the Comte de Bussy-Eabutin, a cousin ofMadame de Sevigne in the seventeenth century.It gives one the impression of being an exactreplica of a seigneurial domain of its time. The main fabric is a vast square edifice withfour towers, each marking one of the cardinalpoints. The Tour du Donjon to the east, andthe Tour de la Chapelle to the west are boundto a heavy ungainly fagade which the ComteRoger de Bussy-Rabutin built in 1649. Thisligature is a sort of a galleried arcade whichitself dates from the reign of Henri II. As to its foundation the chateau, probablydates from an ancestor who came into being inthe twelfth century. In later centuries it fre-quently changed hands, until it came to Leon-ard du Rabutin, Baron dEpiry, and father ofthe Comte Roger who did the real work ofremodelling.
