Furthermore,its sylvan site is still preserved much as it wasin other days, and its alleyed walks are the samethrough which strolled the Colignys and the deCourtneys of old. No sacrilege has been com-mitted here as in many other seigneurial parks,where more than one virgin forest has been cutdown to make firewood, or perhaps sold to bringin gold which an impoverished scion of a noblehouse may have thought he needed. One ave-nue alone of this great park runs straight asthe proverbial flight of an arrow, only ending atthe chateau portal after a course of two kilo-metres straightaway. The park in turn is enclosed by a wall nearlysix kilometres long, and the chief ornamentalwater is considerably over five hundred metresin length, and merits well its appellation ofGrand Canal. This water which fills the moatand surrounds the chateau is not stagnant, butflows gently from the Quincy to the Armangonafter first enveloping the property in its folds. Tonnerre, Tanlay and Ancy-le-Franc 91 Lemuet, is imposingly grand with its centralcorps de logis and its two wings which advanceto join up with the extended members of thePetit Chateau, forming with them the grandCour dHonneur, more familiarly known as theCour Verte. The actual entrance is known as the PortailNeuf (1547) and serves as the habitation of theconcierge. At the right is the imposing Tourde la Ligue (1648) and to the left the Tour desArchives, each enclosing a large spiral stair-way and surmounted by a dome terminated witha lanternon. At each end of the outer fa§adeare two other towers, in form more svelt thanthose in the courtyard. In the vestibule within, as one enters themain building, are the marble busts of eightEoman Emperors, of little interest one thinksin a place where one would expect to find ef-figies of the former illustrious occupants of thechateau.
