Description

Castleford Gates signal box located by the Down Main line alongside High Street level crossing

Castleford Gates signal box was a North Eastern Railway Type S1 design which opened in the 1870s and was extended at the far end in in 1900. As a result of the extension it was necessary to demolish a footbridge and replace it with a subway to allow pedestrians to pass over the railway lines. When the signal box closed it was fitted with a 32 lever reconditioned McKenzie and Holland Number 16 that had been installed in 1927. The level crossing gates were replaced by lifting barriers 26th November 1967. Closure came on on 13th September 1997 along with Whitwood and Castleford Station signal boxes when signalling was transferred to Castleford signal box located diagonally opposite across the level crossing. The signal box remains in a derelict condition
