Summary

[edit]
Description Fortifications have been built on the strategic Argolic Gulf of the Peloponesse since pre-classical times. In 1388, the Venetians bought this property from the French Crusaders who had held from 1212. The Venetians built up the previous structures and the Ottomans took it away in 1540. The Venetians recaptured it in 1685, but only left 80 soldiers to guard it as the furthest outpost in the empire. The Ottomans reclaimed it in 1715. After the Greek War of Independence in 1829, it became the capital of the country for a short time.
