| Description |
Whatever the weather, in the days of steam the train spotters were always there. This is Paddington in the winter of early 1961 and 'Castle' class 4-6-0 No. 7023 "Penrice Castle" seen arriving from the West Country, is copped by hardy spotters on the cold platforms. 7023 still has a full head of steam. It is my guess that she is booked for a quick turn around in Ranelagh Yard. The fire cleaners or droppers at Old Oak would not appreciate an engine coming on shed requiring the clearing of the large fire which is still producing so much steam at the end of a run. As to the train spotters, how nice to see those warm duffle coats and voluminous duffle bags again. Penrice Castle was withdrawn from traffic in February 1965 and subsequently scrapped.
