| Description |
English: The "Chapel" at North Elmham, now in the care of English Heritage, was built around 1359 By Bishop Herbet of Norwich as his own personal chapel. HE built it on the site of East Anglia's first Cathedral, a wooden structure erected in 1101 that the Bishop had demolished to make way for his chapel. The Diocese moved first to Thetford and then to Norwich, where BIshop Herbet built the magnificent Cathedral we still see today.
Even later still, North Elmham Chapel was heavily fortified and turned into a mini-castle! The Nave was divided into separate cellars and the chapel re-located on the new upper floor. |
