Summary
[edit]DescriptionCastle Hill Hospital, Cottingham - geograph.org.uk - 644354.jpg |
English: Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Administrative department offices at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham. The hospital was built from around 1914 on the site of "Cottingham Castle", a manor house owned by Thomas Thompson which stood here until the late 19th century (the actual castle or fortified manor at Cottingham, recorded in 1170 and also known as Baynard's Castle, was further east between Northgate and Hallgate). A large foundation stone east of the front door arches in the outside wall of the administration building bears the following inscription: "THIS STONE WAS LAID FROM THE CITY HALL, HULL, BY ELECTRICITY, BY HIS MOST GRACIOUS MAJESTY THE KING ON THE 26TH JUNE 1914" Two days after King George V took part in this ceremony Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austro-Hungarian empire, was assassinated in Sarajevo in Bosnia, an event which marked the start of the First World War. |
