| Description | Battery Park, New York. Built as the West Battery to defend New York during the war of 1812, it was remodelled in 1825 as Castle Garden, an entertainment venue, and then in 1855 it became the Emigrant Landing Depot where 7.7 million immigrants were processed until operations moved to Ellis Island in 1892. It was then re-modelled by McKIm, Mead and White as the New York Aquarium which lasted from 1896 until 1941. Having been declared a national monument, it now serves as a ticket office for trips to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. |
