[edit]DescriptionCastleIsland Plaque Crescent City, CA.jpg |
English: Castle Island plaque at overlook in Crescent City, California which reads: "Castle Island Preserve. Castle Island is one of the most important sea bird rookeries on the California coast. The 14 acres of jagged rock and gently sloping meadows seasonally support over 150,000 resident and migratory sea and shore birds including the endangered Aleutian Canada Goose. Forty-one different species of birds have been identified many of which nest and breed on the island.
Sea mammals, such as the California Sea Lion and Elephant Seal, are frequently seen in large numbers resting along the island's rocky shore. The Island was purchased by the Nature Conservancy in 1979 with funds generously donated by Mr. George F. Gamble. It was transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1980 for management in perpetuity as a National Wildlife Refuge. 1980." |
