Esta foto participó En otro lugar de Flickr El castillo que hoy conocemos es el resultado de una larga serie de ampliaciones, reformas y añadidos que van desde la primera cerca de la planta cuadrada de principios del siglo XII, hasta las últimas zonas construídas a finales del siglo XV y principios del XVI. Posteriores incorporaciones y las numerosas reformas llevadas a cabo desde principios del siglo XX, han contribuído a la complejidad del conjunto, tal y como lo conocemos hoy en día. Los escudos y blasones de quienes lo ocuparon y contribuyeron en su construcción son prueba de sus diferentes etapas. Primer periodo, finales del siglo XII y principios del XIII: Cuando en 1178 Ponferrada pasa a depender de la Orden del Temple, por donación de los reyes leoneses, los templarios encuentran una pequeña fortaleza que fue en su origen castro y posteriormente ciudadela romana. Aunque el origen del castillo se sitúa ante del siglo XII, es en esta etapa cuando se refuerza y reedifica el recinto amurallado, con fábrica de cal y canto, para proteger y custodiar a los peregrinos del Camino de Santiago y defender la entrada a la zona noroeste de la península. Segundo periodo, siglos XIII y XIV: Disuelta la Orden del Temple, su maestre hará entrega de la fortaleza y villa al rey Fernando IV, que a su vez lo donará a su mayordomo, Pedro Fernández de Castro, Señor de Lemos y Sarria, que comenzaría a levantar la parte denominada Castillo Viejo, en la esquina norte de la cerca www.castillosnet.org/programs/castillosnet.php?tip=inf&am... |
