Mandado edificar por Filipe II, na base do Monte Brasil, é uma das mais imponentes fortalezas portuguesas dos sécs. XVI-XVII. O seu pórtico principal, lavrado em cantaria negra e coroado pelas armas reais, a ponte dos arcos, os torreões, o sistema de fossos e um interior rico, com a Igreja de São João Baptista e o Palácio dos Governadores do Castelo, fazem desta fortificação um dos mais grandiosos monumentos do País. Nele estiveram presas figuras célebres, como Gungunhana e D.
