Com ocupação islâmica entre os séculos VIII-XII, o Castelo de Palmela foi conquistado por D. Afonso Henriques, em 1147 e definitivamente recuperado por D. Sancho I. Sede definitiva da Ordem de Santiago, de 1443 até à sua extinção, em 1834, a fortificação é Monumento Nacional desde 1910. A posição geográfica do castelo permite um domínio estratégico de parte do estuário sadino, de uma vertente da cordilheira da Arrábida e das planícies envolventes que a separam do Tejo. Esta situação, noutros tempos, revestia-se da maior importância pelas ligações e possibilidades de comunicação que se estabeleciam com os castelos circundantes das linhas do Tejo e do Sado. Dentro das muralhas do Castelo encontram-se: a Pousada Histórica de Palmela, situada no antigo convento da Ordem de Santiago; a Igreja de Santiago; as ruínas da Igreja de Sta. Maria, em cuja sacristia está instalado o Gabinete de Estudos sobre a Ordem de Santiago; o Posto de Turismo; lojas de artesanato e produtos regionais e, um Café-Espanada. O Museu Municipal apresenta diversos espaços visitáveis no Castelo: o Espaço Arqueológico, o Espaço de Transmissões Militares e a Reserva Visitável de escultura de São Tiago (esta com visita sujeita a marcação prévia). <a href="http://turismo.cm-palmela.pt/castelo-de-palmela" rel="noreferrer nofollow">turismo.cm-palmela.pt/castelo-de-palmela</a> |
