Title
Cast lead weight. Triangular
Description
English: A tall, triangular cast lead weight, probably dating from the Roman to Post Medieval periods but essentially undatable. The weight is complete and undecorated, with a grey/creamy patina. It is flat, tapering in width to the apex, but tapering in thickness from a thicker apex to a thinner wider base. It has 12 rounded knobs of iron (projecting 3.24mm at most) which are protruding through the side wall on on one side near the wider end, and 6 similar knobs (projecting 0.80mm at most) on the opposite side. The weight measures 69.75mm high, 48.85mm wide at the base, and 9.46mm thick at the base flaring to 16.05mm thick at the top. It weighs 264.5g.

This weight can be compared with several others on the PAS database, usually with a small suspension hole at the top (e.g. PUBLIC-310788, PUBLIC-20A1C7, PUBLIC-16BE67). NCL-8D75FA, LIN-3298B2 and LANCUM-4C14F4 all have iron knobs, hooks or nails protruding from the lead, but are more shield-shaped. These weights are not well understood. It is possible they could have been fishing weights dating from the medieval period or later, but due to a lack of context this weight must remain undated.
