Title |
Cast cu-alloy mount in shape of a dog or lion biting his own tail |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy mount dating from the medieval period, i.e. c. 14th-16th century. The mount is cast in the shape of a dog (or possibly a lion suggested by the mane) looking back over his shoulder and biting his own tail. The tip of the tail is still in the dog's mouth, but the major part of the tail is missing. The surface of the object does not seem to have been gilt and there is only a moulded pattern on the surface, mimicking the dog's fur and a fluffy collar. The dog might possibly be a St Bernhard's with a biggish head, shortish limps and a huge snout and lips.
There is a broken loop on the reverse. It was of rectangular shape with the central, horizontal bar missing. An almost identical mount was recorded under SUR-32B667. |
