Cast cu-alloy flanged axehead |

Description |
English: Cast cu-alloy flanged axe dating from the Middle Bronze Age, i.e. ca. 1400-1250 BC. This flanged axe is part of the Taunton metalwork assemblage, when winged axes are more common in Northern England. There is a lozenge/oval shaped flange on each side of the butt end. The outer side of each flange is slightly convex, resulting in the gap between the flange crests narrowing at the top above the septum. The blade tip is crescent shaped and there are very faint hammer marks and striations from repeated sharpening of the axe. There is no obvious damage to the butt, body, wings or blade. There is no obvious stop ridge for the handle to butt against, but the blade is thicker than the septum and there is a not very pronounced curved stop on the main body just above the lower end of the wings. The axe has a rough, patchy, green and brown patina with evidence of bronze disease. Other than that it is in good condition and not needing immediate treatment. |
