Title |
Cast copper alloy cup weight dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy cup weight dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). It is circular in plan. The raised outer rim is decorated with a series of 22 punched dots. The inner base of the object has been scored several times in an irregular pattern. A hole has also been punched through the base. It is possibly that this was done to render the weight useless. The remains of guiding can be seen on the object.
Cup weights were used to weigh gold and silver as scrap metal or coins, and other precious material. Similar examples can be found on p125 and p130, Saunders, (2001). It can be from the 12th to the 14th century. |
