Title
Cast copper alloy book clasp dating to the Medieval period.
Description
English: Cast copper alloy book clasp dating to the Medieval period. It consists of a thin strip of copper alloy which is sub-rectangular in plan, and rectangular in section. It has been shaped in a symmetrical way with both the top and bottom of the object projecting outwards to the same width on either side. These projections have rounded ends. In the centre of the object the copper again projects outwards, twice on either side, to the same width. The central projections are both narrower and shorter than those at the ends. The object is decorated with ring and dot pattern. In the centre of the object is a dot surrounded by two rings. A smaller dot and ring are above and below this. Each of the larger projections has ring and dot decoration. An integral hook for attachment remains at one end of the object while at the other end the remains of a broken hook can be seen. The clasp has been broken, possibly in antiquity, and one side has been bent. It has a dark reddish patina and the remains of gilding can be seen.
