Summary
[edit]DescriptionCast.jpg |
Standard grade pupils need to be able to discuss the process of casting aluminium in the SQA exam. This is part of the KU element of the course. This sequence of photos goes through the entire process from the preparation of the cope and drag through the prep of the runner and riser using sprue pins through to the final pour and removal of the casting. We encountered problems at the last stage. The internal channels were not cut deeply enough and the molten aluminium did not have a clear passage through the mould cavity. The pattern was made prom expanded polystyrene. This material just vaporises on contact with the aluminium heated to 650 degrees C. We'll update these photos when we get a better pour. |
