Summary
[edit]DescriptionCassinia arcuata plant Jenene Kidston 5.jpg |
English: Perennial, evergreen shrub 1-3 m tall; aromatic when bruised. Young seedlings tend to be single stemmed and upright, like mini pine trees. Leaves are 2-15 mm long, thin with rolled edges, almost cylindrical; densely packed. Leaf surfaces are sticky and covered with matted white hairs on the underside. Flowerheads are brownish and drooping. Flowers from spring to autumn. Common in temperate areas, especially colonising roadsides and pastures on shallow, low fertility, acidic soils. Proliferates following land clearing; favoured by overgrazing. Invasive, unpalatable and not eaten by stock; may be poisonous. Best managed using a number of methods (herbicides, grazing, mechanical control and biological control). Glyphosate and selective woody weed herbicides are registered for control in pastures. Slashing and mulching can be effective on mature plants if cut low. Cultivation is effective in killing small plants. Chip or pull small, isolated plants when soil is moist to avoid excessive soil disturbance. Sow introduced pasture where suitable or maintain and encourage other native and introduced perennial species. Improve soil fertility and legume growth. |
