Thus every part of thecircumference of the pipe is subject to asqueezing or extrusion process whichcauses the metal to flow into tool marksor any crevice left in the interior of theflange. A slight expansion takes place beading or peening effect of the rolls ina circumferential direction is due to theconcentrated pressure at one point, andthis causes a flow of metal away fromthat point. It is the purpose of the present articleto give some idea of the extent to whichthis principle can be utilised for the pur-pose of connecting flanges to steel pipes,and of the machinery requisite for suchwork. The pioneer in this field of workis Luther D. Lovekin, of Philadelphia,chief engineer of the New York Ship-building Co., of Camden. The expanding tool proper to the tool then advances or withdrawsthe central mandrel. The central tap-ered roll is attached to this mandrel,but is left free to revolve independentlyof it by means of the friction thrust ringsshown.
