stigateand report upon the water supply of thecity of New York,—a work of exceed-ing importance and magnitude, whichculminated in a report in the shape of a600-page volume generally acknowl-edged to be the most elaborate waterworks report ever prepared by one en-gineer. Mr. Freeman, in addition to his mem-bership in the American Society ofMechanical Engineers, is a member ofthe American Society of Civil Engi-neers and of the Boston Society of CivilEngineers. The Norman Medal of theformer society was twice awarded tohim for papers of special merit,—one onthe hydraulics of fire streams and theother on the nozzle as a water meter.Of the Boston Society he was presidentin 1893. At the present time he isidentified as a director with several bank-ing institutions; he is also a member ofthe corporation of the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology, and a trusteeof the Rhode Island School of Design.The honorary degree of Doctor of Sci-ence was conferred upon him this yearby Brown University.
