THE MODERN HORIZONTAL STEAM ENGINE 429 head blocks work. The strength andsolidity of the design is noticeable, par-ticularly in the shape of the casting oneach side of the main bearing, the jawsbeing obviously strong enough to dis-pense with the usual overhanging capspanning the plummer block and actingas a tie. The cylinders, which arefitted with Messrs. Pollit & Wigzellstrip gear of the Corliss valves, are 19and 39 inches in diameter, with a strokeof 42 inches. The fly-wheels are each14 feet in diameter, weigh 20 tons, andmake 100 revolutions per minute. Thesteam pressure is 180 pounds per squareinch, superheated, and all the pistonrods and Corliss valve spindles are,therefore, fitted with metallic packing.The engine nearest the spectator isprovided with the Whitehead governor,and the further one with the Hartnellgovernor, with a view of testing oneagainst the other under identical work-ing conditions.
