Brick bank building in downtown Cashmere, Washington.
Summary
[edit]DescriptionCashmere State Bank, Cashmere, WA.jpg |
English: This building on Aplets Way was built in 1909 for Cashmere's second bank, the Cashmere State Bank. Founded in 1907 by Spokane banker Guy C. Browne, also president of the Columbia Valley Bank of Wenatchee. It was designed by notable architect Willis A. Ritchie, better known for designing many of Washington's courthouses in the 1890s. This building was a scaled down version of the Columbia Valley Bank building in Wenatchee as well as another Browne family bank in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, built earlier in the decade. The building's basement was home to Cashmere's public library for several decades. At the onset of the Great Depression, the Cashmere State Bank would absorb the rival Farmers and Merchants Bank in 1931 in hopes of creating a stronger institution but would fail in early 1932, leaving the town without any banks. The Cashmere Valley Bank would be established by the end of the same year, first occupying the former F&M bank space but would eventually expand back into this building as well as the Haug Building that was built between the two banks in 1922. |
