Summary
[edit]DescriptionCarving on the tomb - geograph.org.uk - 1605669.jpg |
English: Monumental brass of Thomas Chaucer (c.1367-1434), Speaker of the House of Commons and son of Geoffrey Chaucer, the poet, by his wife Philippa Roet. Above Thomas are his mother's arms of Roet (Gules, three Catherine Wheels or) (Roet) Canting arms, French rouet = "spinning wheel". Thomas married Matilda (or Maud) Burghersh, second daughter and coheiress of Sir John Burghersh, nephew of Henry Burghersh (1292-1340), Bishop of Lincoln (1320-1340) and Lord Chancellor of England (1328–1330), younger son of Robert de Burghersh, 1st Baron Burghersh (died 1305), and a nephew of Bartholomew de Badlesmere, 1st Baron Badlesmere. The marriage brought him large estates, including the manor of Ewelme, Oxfordshire. Thomas's feet rest on a unicorn, a head of which animal was the crest of Chaucer. Above Matilda are a differenced version of the arms of Burghersh (Argent, a chief gules overall a lion rampant double queued or), which seem later to have been adopted by Thomas Chaucer as his own. They were quartered by de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk, ultimate heir of Chaucer.
