Summary
[edit]DescriptionCarved wooden male figure (17081484771).jpg |
This carved wooden male figure with prominent ribs and inlaid bone and obsidian eyes is called a 'moai kavakava'. It may represent one of the spirits of the dead. Some researchers interpret 'moai havakava' as evidence that the Rapanui suffered from malnutrition in more recent times. However, others think that they were shaped that way for religious or spiritual reasons. Such figures were often made for the purpose of exchange with crews and passengers of passing ships in return for European goods and commodities. 0.9758/1 Manchester Museum
