Description
English: Letter sent by José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva to D. Pedro, later Pedro I of Brazil, about the general situation of the country and the progress of the movement towards independence from Portugal. The letter contains a decisive excerpt to the proclamation of independence. Written in Rio de Janeiro and dated of September 1st, 1822. Unsigned. Three sheets manuscript, 21 x 30.5 cm. Museu Paulista (Museu do Ipiranga) collection, São Paulo, Brazil.

Translation of excerpt:

"Sir. The die is cast: from Portugal we have nothing to expect but slavery and horrors. Come, Your Highness, as soon as possible and make up your mind, because irresolutions and luke-warm measures, in face of these occurrences that won't spare us, are worthless, and each momment lost is a disgrace."
Português: Carta de José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva a Dom Pedro, relatando o estado geral dos negócios do país e o progresso do movimento para a Independência. Contém trecho decisivo para a proclamação da independência. Escrito no Rio de Janeiro e datado de 1º de setembro de 1822. Sem assinatura. Manuscrita em três folhas, com 21 x 30,5 cm cada. Acervo do Museu Paulista (ou do Ipiranga), São Paulo, Brasil.

"Senhor. O dado está lançado: de Portugal não temos a esperar senão escravidão e horrores. Venha V.A.R. quanto antes e decida-se, porque irresoluções, e medidas d'água morna, à vista desse contrário que não nos poupa, para nada servem, e um momento perdido he uma desgraça. Muitas cousas terei a dizer a V.A.R., mas nem do tempo nem da cabeça posso dizer.
