Manuscript letter

Archives Number: 1011/002.002-002#013

Lowell March 29th 1835.
Many thanks, ma belle et bonne, for your kind invitation an invitation to which Mother gives her full consent, and to which you may be assured I had no objections to raise, Monday a week from tomorrow, I will endeavour to comply with your wishes and tear myself away from this dear delightful place, and about twelve o’clock or so you may expect to see me roll up in a coach and six, fully prepared to take possesion [sic]; as for the bare possibility of my [suppling?] Mary’s vacancy, the idea is monstrous, but at least I will do my best to make you forget the differance. Never did a request come more à propos, for Lowell is now absolutely unindurable [sic], I am losing flesh, health and spirits, walking is absolutely impossible, mud ancle [sic] deep, shaded off with puddles impossible, to give you an idea of the prevailing opinion as to our promenading; yesterday retourning from a visit, I stood for a moment aghast t at the prospect near me, in front one of the above puddles, at each side, a litteral [sic] representation of the “Slough of Depair [sic]”; a party on the oposite [sic] side, were looking at the interesting prospect with the same emotions as myself, at last, as return was impossible, we screwed up our courage and dresses, and plunged in, in passing, I heard a doleful voice cry out, “Well, this is [high?] work I declare!” Oh for your clean sidewalks!
[page 2] Then the weather, snow one day, rain the next, fog the next, and hail to close the account, as for the sun, I am sure I forget when I saw it!
I have been quite dissipated for three weeks past out three times a week, attending lectures on Zoology by Dr. Mcnuter?] I was quite pleased generally slept thro’ half!_I think your family have taken to quite erratic habit’s, but you dont [sic] half come up to us here, why Cousin Fan, the houses migrate here, merely express a wish and every thing is ready, that’s the way we wander here, carry our houses with us!_
Our room is quite a hot house, Tulips, roses, dallia [sic]-- and all sorts of flowers in full bloom and I have been enployed [sic] lately painting them as they came forth, an agreable [sic] tho’ endless task; I shall make this letter very short, for I am rather in the invalid scale today, and my hand trembles so I cannot write decently, and of course nothing new to tell. Remember me to all your family, and hoping we shall meet soon I remain
Your affectionate cousin
Caroline F.
