English: Carn Alw fortified outcrop "An unusually vigorously protected small enclosure under the lee of a dolerite crag which the defensive wall encloses." (N.P.Figgis, Prehistoric Preseli)
The rock formations create natural defenses on all sides of Carn Alw save the southeast where an unusual 'chevaux de frise' semi-circle of protruding stones has been put in place to deter attackers. There are no signs of human habitation and it may be that valuable stock (horses or cattle) were enclosed here. The name Carn Alw means Call Cairn, sometimes rendered as Fort of Echoes: it is reputed to have such qualities, and some authorities believe that 'ringing stones' can be found here.
