Summary
[edit]DescriptionCarman Hill-fort, wall of inner enclosure - geograph.org.uk - 1348626.jpg |
English: Carman Hill-fort: wall of inner enclosure This is the third in a series of ten linked items showing the structure of an ancient hill-fort on Carman Hill (for an in-depth discussion of its history, see 697526).
This photo shows part of the wall of the smaller inner enclosure. This is a view along the wall in a counter-clockwise direction; the wall leads directly away from the photographer's position at first, but then curves to the left before it can reach the much more recent dry-stone wall. At the point where the photograph was taken, on the south-western side of the inner enclosure, there is a gap in the wall: note the rounded end of the wall here, and the way in which it slopes down to ground level near the bottom edge of the image; there was a similar feature immediately behind the photographer's position. This gap is thought to be the location of an original entrance to the inner enclosure. The following satellite image shows the course of the wall (the photo was taken from the position indicated by the yellow marker): http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=55.980507,-4.61142&spn=0.001318,0.003262&t=h&z=19&msid=111659464483026017583.00046bfcd04e0a192d2f3 Previous: 1348616.
