English: This is a roundabout called the Carimbo de Emigração (Emigration Stamp) which consists of a three sets of sculpted figures surrounding a central element representing an immigration stamp. The full sculpture was conceived by the Belgian Francis Tondeur and was inaugurated on 7 November 2008. The sculptor was developed to commemorate Almancil and Loulé 172 anniversary as a "land of the Diaspora". It honours the local populace who emigrated to various corners of the world in search of a better life. They in return have been replaced in recent years by migrants from Eastern Europe, Africa and in recent years by another type of emigration, namely English, Irish, German and Dutch, most of whom are in the age group above 50, who have chossen the area to enjoy there retirement. The sculpture stands on the roundabout at Jardim de Comunidades in Almancil, Algarve, Portugal. |
