35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Artiodactyla; Family: Cervidae; Genus: Rangifer; Genus species: Rangifer tarandus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 1.2-2.2 m; Height: 107-127 cm; Weight: 91-272 kg; Identification: The caribou is brown in the summer and gray in the winter. It has a white rump and tail, and no naked patch on the muzzle. Both sexes have antlers; Habitat: Tundra, woodlands; Diet: Herbivore: grass, lichens; Reproduction: A single calf is born after a gestation period of 240 days; Social Structure: Females gather in herds with their young. Male caribou remain solitary; Behavior: Some populations migrate hundreds of miles in the winter and spring; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Caribou are the only deer species in which both males and females have antlers and do not have a naked muzzle patch. Males shed their antlers from November to April.
