Description

Carex castanea, chestnut sedge, collected by Theodore S. and Barbara A. Cochrane on June 23, 1994.

Boreal forest-like woodland (Thuja occidentalis-1 dom., Betula papyrifera-2 dom., Populus tremuloides 3 dom.) on gentle slope bordering large white cedar swamp; groundlayer association: Pteridium aquilinum, Carex castanea, C. gracillima, C. granularis, C. pedunculata, Cyperipedium pubescens, Pyrola asarifolia, Geum rivale, and Populus balsamea seedlings.

Loosely cespitose, shoot bases 1-4 centimeters apart; largest clump with 24 fertile culms plus 41 sterile shoots, 12.9 dm across. Occasional in understory, locally frequent in snowmobile trail.
