| Description |
A First Great Western HST - led by power car 43035, stands at Cardiff Central on August Bank Holiday Monday. The train has arrived at 0845 with the 5L42 0534 Swansea to Cardiff Central ECS (empty coaching stock), ready to form the 1L42 service to London Paddington at 0925. Normally the train would run as a passenger service at 0730 from Carmarthen, calling at Cardiff en route, but due to industrial action by the Rail and Maritime Transport union (RMT). The run from Swansea was scheduled to include a stop of 2 hours and 20 minutes in the Up loop line at Pencoed. Things did not go to plan with the revised 0925 Paddington service, as non availability of traincrew (presumably a train manager) meant the service was cancelled between Cardiff and Newport. The HST ran empty to Newport, and passengers from Cardiff were advised to use the 0921 Arriva Trains Wales Holyhead service as far as Newport, where they could join the Paddington service. As well as the effect of the strike on FGW services, trains between Newport and Cardiff had also been disrupted due to sheep on the line, and I wondered if this was the reason for the non-availability of train crew at Cardiff www.flickr.com/photos/126337928@N05/20843200929/ |
