Summary

[edit]
Description

Carbonized plant fragments in gray mudshale in the Mississippian of Ohio, USA.

"Carbonization" refers to fossils that are preserved as dark, flattened, carbon-rich films. This is a common preservation style in plant fossils, but some fossil animal groups are usually carbonized - for example, the graptolites.

The abundant plant fossil fragments shown here are in shale derived from the Cuyahoga Formation, a marine, mixed siliciclastics unit in the Mississippian of eastern Ohio.
