Description

Capt. Charles Knowlton (CP 1322), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Captain Charles Knowlton, 10th Louisiana Regiment, Ewell’s Corps, who had the right knee joint excised as the result of a gunshot wound sustained at the battle of Mine Run, Birginia on November 27, 1863. The wound became infected and surgeon James B. Read decided to excise the joint entirely and wire the other bones together to heal. Patient was discharged from the hospital in April 1864 and retained the ability to walk and even dance. This image shows the bare damaged leg standing.
