Summary
[edit]DescriptionCappellaDiReginald Pole.JPG |
English: Cappella di Reginald Pole.Via Appia Antica, Rome
The circular chapel of Reginald Pole, at the crossroad between the Via Appia Antica and Via della Caffarella, just before the second mile of the Appian way. The chapel has two doors, now walled up with blocks of tuff, with jambs and lintels, yellow travertine brickwork used for the 4 circular windows and 8 faux columns with Corinthian capitals and bases in peperino, and a domed cuspidata covered by tiles. It was built in 1539 by the English Cardinal Reginald Pole in exile in Rome during the reign of Henry VIII after the Cardinal sided with Pope Paul III and opposed the new Church of England. |
